Oppo A74 5G Review: The Best Affordable Phone

The 5G phone that’s the best affordable handset on the market. The 5G speeds are so good it might make you want to ditch your home internet. the Oppo A74 is the latest phone from the company that’s been making phones for a while but doesn’t have a huge following in the US (yet).

It’s a budget phone that has a lot of potential, but it’s not perfect. If you’re looking for a cheap, good-looking phone that can do a lot of the things you need it to do, you might want to consider the Oppo A74.

The Oppo A74 5G is an affordable smartphone with a lot to offer. The phone is packed with premium features, such as a 6.2-inch display, a 4,000mAh battery, and a 32-megapixel front camera.

But at the end of the day, the Oppo A74 5G is a smartphone that costs $399.99. So how does it stack up against the competition? Let's find out.

Oppo A74 5G Unboxing

The pre-production model I have does not include the 5G module. But the smartphone is nearly identical to the previously launched Oppo A75 5G, which is one of the few phones in India to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 SoC.

I've had the opportunity to play around with the phone over the past week, and it's been a comfortable experience, at least for the first week. I've seen a lot of marketing for the phone on social media.

And it has brought me to the conclusion that most people who buy a smartphone will not put in the research or background work to know about what goes into a product before putting it down on the counter. The phone is a bit on the thick side, but that's not much of a problem for people looking for a massive battery.

➤ Design

The Oppo A74 5G features an ergonomically curved back and rounded edges. The phone is primarily built of plastic with some metallic accents on the sides.

The fingerprint scanner is placed below the home button which doubles up as a shortcut key for accessing notifications, taking screenshots and calling up the voice assistant. Oppo has given the smartphone a headphone jack at the bottom along with a USB-C port.

At the back, you have the camera with an LED flash and a fingerprint sensor. The dual-SIM phone comes with 4G VoLTE support as well as a dedicated microSD card slot that supports up to 128GB of expandable storage.

The 5.7-inch HD+ display has a resolution of 1440x720 pixels and an aspect ratio of 18:9. The display is bright and the colors are good.

➤ Display

One of the selling points of the Oppo A74 5G is its 6.3-inch 18:9 aspect ratio display. The display is bright and vivid and allows for excellent sunlight legibility even when the brightness is set to maximum.

The panel exhibits decent viewing angles and excellent colours on the white as well as the dark side of the display. The dynamic contrast is quite impressive on the panel, especially during a full day of browsing.

However, the display is only comparable to the flagship phones with the upcoming flagships likely to be better, including the OnePlus 6T and the Huawei P20 Pro. The camera is Oppo's most feature-rich area of the smartphone.

Apart from its quality, what is more impressive is the ease of use. I really didn't struggle with most of the features on the phone.

➤ Performance

One of the attractions of a 5G smartphone is the ability to perform extremely high-end tasks at lightning speed. However, given the fact that we are talking about the smartphone industry, the industry norms, and the specifications.

The phone's performance is likely to be rather generic. Not all phones in the sub-Rs. The 20,000 price range is equally powerful. This is where the success of the Oppo A74 will rest. The smartphone is capable of handling heavy multitasking thanks to the enormous battery that it carries.

You get a massive 3,500mAh battery that supports a fast charging technology that can quickly charge your phone to 70 percent in 30 minutes. It's also backed by Oppo's own VOOC technology, which is capable of charging any phone at 100 percent within a span of 30 minutes.

➤ Battery Life

With a 3,400mAh battery powering the Oppo A74 5G, one would hope to get close to one full day on a single charge with moderate usage. During my testing, the phone showed one day of normal usage, including social media, Instagram, gaming, and internet use with Wi-Fi on and a few calls too.

However, the phone also showed just a single hour on YouTube and an hour-and-a-half on Google Play Music for the audiophiles. One can play games for longer, but I noticed that the battery did get drained faster than I expected.

I generally finished the day with 10-15% of the battery charge left. That said, charging the battery with a charger that provides 5V/2A (12W) on a 5V/2A charger worked just fine and the battery was fully charged in the evening.

➤ Camera

The 5G phone doesn't come with dual cameras. The dual-camera module is placed on the front, and it's made up of a 24-megapixel primary sensor and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor.

The Oppo A74 5G's 24-megapixel primary sensor takes very good photos in daylight. But, in low light, the camera will struggle to shoot photos well. One of the apps that comes pre-installed on the smartphone is Bokeh Camera, which allows users to take pictures of a subject and in the background blur the background.

I wasn't a big fan of the feature; and using the Oppo A74 5G, I never took a Bokeh picture. For me, selfies have become a trial in a smartphone.

➤ Software

One of the key elements in the test of whether a phone can perform well on a 5G network is the software, which has to run smoothly with minimal glitches. The first few days of my testing with the Oppo A74 5G were rather tough with most of the software issues I ran into.

In my experience, the phone could not recognise Wi-Fi connections, so it dropped out or limited its connection to a lower connection. On the positive side, the phone worked with both VoLTE and Wi-Fi and it did not show any sign of lag or slowdown, even during data intensive activities like video streaming.

Apps I mostly used the Phone app, which has all the apps and services that you would want on the phone. The Contacts app too worked fine and could display names and numbers on the phone easily.

➤ Conclusion

Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition (2019) is one of the most visually appealing smartphones that I have ever used. Vivo Nex Dual Display Edition (2019) is one of the most visually appealing smartphones that I have ever used.

The OnePlus 7 is another smartphone that is an innovation in technology. This is one of the few devices that will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, though at the moment it's being called the 8150.

So, the specifications of the OnePlus 7 are not out yet. However, it's clear that OnePlus will give tough competition to the Huawei P20 Pro and OnePlus 6T when these phones launch.
